(cotton and poly blends • 57″ diameter by 6″ deep)

While this 3D quilt does not contain or depict a “fodo”, it is inspired by a Kodachrome slide which my mother took during a classic road trip to see the American west. On the cardboard sleeve, she wrote “This is where I stopped to rest”. Like many other images she captured, it was unremarkable in content and composition — especially by art-photography standards of the day. Perhaps it was shown as part of a post-vacation living room slide show common to the era which got a comically bad reputation as snooze-worthy. But for me it is precious, honest, direct, and meaningful as a moment overlooked while driving for days on roadways which can be, admittedly, very monotonous. Instead of taking flashy photos to impress family and friends back home, Mom simply documented the experience and I honor that. Many people claim “it’s not the destination…” but here it is actually true.

The quilt back is made of the most dirt-like fabric I could find.
