One in a series of Fodomosaics™, “Swell” is made of 300,000 tiny bits of glass hand strung in a precise sequence to create a pictorial beaded curtain.
Upon close inspection, the composition appears random if not chaotic. (at right)

Seen from a distance, however, “Swell” depicts a dark, potent, grey sky symbolizing our current social, political, and planetary turbulence. “Swell” also acknowledges how these troubled times may be promoting or exacerbating many mental health challenges.
Upon close examination, the array of translucent jewel-like tones appears optimistic and representative of individuals, inclusion, community and collective effort. Each bead represents 1,111 people in the United States and conjures the Latin phrase “E Pluribus Unum” inscribed on our currency and translates as “out of many, one” to reflect both the art process itself and what it symbolically represents.
“Swell” also attempts to address that which is eternal even as this is increasingly called into question in the face of human-made catastrophes.
